Index note
References
Every fact on a compound record traces back to a public source. This page explains which sources the index uses, what a citation on a record supports, and how to cite a record yourself. The source index below lists every record and the sources it cites.
Sources the index relies on
- PubChem, the open chemistry database run by the U.S. National Library of Medicine. It is the main registry source. A record cites one PubChem compound by its CID, and the formula, molecular weight, and structure image come from that compound.
- UniProt, the protein sequence database. It is cited when it is the entry that actually states a peptide sequence, as on the VIP record.
- Peptide Sequence Database, linked from a record when it has a page for the same compound. It is a cross-reference, not a source for fields the registries do not support.
What a citation supports
A source on a record supports that record’s identity facts: which molecule the name refers to, its sequence, formula, weight, and registry numbers. It is not a citation for any biological effect, safety claim, or clinical use. The index does not keep a bibliography of study outcomes.
Some names point to more than one registry entry, such as a copper complex and its free peptide. When that happens, the record may list both entries so the difference is visible, and its naming note says which entry its fields describe.
How sources are written
Each source on a record has a label and a link. Registry sources are labeled with the database, the identifier, and the name the registry uses, for example “PubChem CID 9941957 — BPC-157”. The registry name can differ from the common research name. The label keeps the name the registry uses, so the link can be checked directly.
CAS numbers and PubChem CIDs
A PubChem CID identifies one exact compound entry. A CAS number is shown only when it resolves back to the same CID already on the record. Registries often list CAS numbers that belong to a salt, a parent molecule, or a related compound. Those are not shown, so some records have a CID and no CAS number.
What is not cited
- Supplier catalogs, product pages, and certificates of analysis.
- Forum posts, social media, and marketing material.
- Study results used as evidence that a compound works.
These can point to a naming problem worth checking, but they do not support an identity fact on their own.
Citing a record
To cite a record, give the compound name, the site name, the record address, and the review date shown at the bottom of the record. For example:
“BPC-157.” Research Peptide Index. https://researchpeptideindex.com/compounds/bpc-157/. Last reviewed October 13, 2026.
Use the address and review date of the record you are citing. For chemistry facts in formal work, cite the registry entry the record links to as well, since that is the primary source.
When a source changes
Registries revise their entries. If a cited entry changes, is merged, or is withdrawn, the record is reviewed against the new entry and its review date is updated. If you notice a broken or outdated source, use the corrections page. The full checking rules are on the methodology page.
